1 Days Until Goodbyes And the Uncertain End (part 3)
Evester laid Zeydar down. Zeydar was still shaking, but he was asleep, and Evester needed to get them food. Releasing the limiters had taken a toll on Zeydar. Without the staffs acting as a filter for the magic to go through and stay within, Zeydar had been assaulted by the energy. Evester hoped that Zeydar would remain asleep long enough for Evester to get them good. He found Heia in the hallway. “Hi?”
“Does he do that all the time?” She asked, leaning against a wall.
“That?” Evester paused. “No. This a recent thing. He hasn’t been this bad since he detoxed…”
“That can not be healthy.”
“It’s not. He’s not keeping food down.”
When he could eat at all.
Evester watched as Heia’s face contorted. “This really is the end. Isn’t it.”
“I think we all had a fantasy of a possibility that we would be able to exist in the world and go back home, but that’s impossible.”
Evester started walking. The more time he stalled, the higher the likelihood that Zeydar woke up. While he did not fear that Zeydar would hurt them — let alone destroy the ship as Zeydar was afraid of — he did not like the idea of Zeydar suffering on his own.
Heia followed after him. “So… When is the wedding.”
Evester paused and then laughed. “How did you find out?”
“Kim figured it out.”
“Soon. I can not give you the date. It’s a surprise.”
“Bullshit.”
“We want to focus on the Uncertain End before even thinking about it.”
Heia nodded. “It’s gotten around the whole ship that the Uncertain End is happening. I’m not sure that everyone believed that it would.”
Evester had to agree. He had not always believed it would. Even now, he did not care that it was. He just wanted to make sure Zeydar was okay. That was all that mattered. The Uncertain End was an inevitability. There was no stopping it, and even if they could not survive, he wanted to be with Zeydar. “I didn’t think that it would either, to be honest.”
“And now?”
“Now we know. It was always coming for us. We can’t avoid it.”
If they still failed, he wanted to be with Zeydar in the end.
“What do you think it is?”
“I’m not sure I want to know.”
They made their way to the cafeteria. He needed to eat, even when Zeydar could not. The next day, he had a feeling, was going to be far worse than any of the other days they’d faced thus far. Zeydar was going to suffer, and Evester needed all the energy he could get.
