Echo {RW}

Echo {RW}

The echo of voices started soft. A siren song luring the mind deeper into the darkness. She knew she shouldn’t approach. Her mother had told her to avoid the voice when it came for her.

The first time she had heard the voice was when she was ten. For a decade she had fought it off in her nightmares. It would come in the grey of the night as the wind lulled her to sleep. It started as a distant wordless vocalization that grew closer with each breath. She learned that voice was beautiful, but it could not be followed. She had to pretend that she did not hear its twisting serenade harmonizing with itself as the echo grew.

She had once asked her mother what the voice was. Her mother had claimed that the voice was calling them home. Her mother believed that they had left some strange land to come to this one. The voice was a calling to return, but they could not. Their homeland was dangerous, terrible; they had left it on purpose.

130 Days Until Adaption And the Uncertain End (part 2)

Heia stood with Lynx. Heia was dressed in the best clothes that they had. The presentation at hand was one that no one wanted to be present for. It was unfortunate that Heia was the one who was supposed to give it.

“Why do we need to dress her up like a model?” Trace asked kicking her legs to atop the bed where she sat.

“An idol.” Lynx corrected as Kim continued to do Heia’s makeup. “Something to idolize a symbol. They do it in all the great books.”

“I’m just giving a speech for motivation.” They had strong armed Alan Penn into action. The X’s were working around the clock to complete the space program, with factories that had not been used in decades. They had gotten little support from the Circles, but Heia knew that Zeydar and Shawn could not strong from the Circles the way that she had.

“Okay. There.” Kim stepped back. “Perfect.”

“Do I look deadly?” Heia asked the room. Lynx gave a thumbs up and Onyx nodded. Trace rolled her eyes as Robee looked Heia over and shrugged. Only Kori said yes, and even then Heia didn’t trust her.

“We just need to give them motivation to work.” Heia spoke more to herself than to them. “To pack. To prepare. Personal belongings only. Sustenance and food will…” Be provided by the Circles, despite the fact that they made it. She hated the fact that all of their accomplishments were claimed by the Circles.

“What if Zeydar can’t make them bend?” Robee asked to no one in specific.

“Is that to say you don’t think Estashia can?” Kim looked back to him which had him shaking his head. ”She’ll do it. No matter what.”

“And then the Circles help us.” Robee, too, did not believe that they ever would. They had a track record of abandonment after all.

“And then we just need the Stars not to abandon us.” Heia thought of the next attacks by the Aralax that were predicted. “We need them to survive.”

“You trust Zeydar to pull that off?” Robee asked then.

“We have to.” Lynx sighed.

“They are here.” Onyx called out to them, bringing all the attention to the door.

“Are you ready?” Alan asked as he knocked on the door.

“Use me as your prop piece.” Heia walked towards him, Kim following in step behind her.

They walked through the halls following Alan who had received training videos from Evester. The world had gotten them, and Heia had yet to see them. From what she knew they were training videos on how to kill Aralax. They were all concept vides, but knowing Evester there would be real examples given later.

Alan Penn stood waiting for her as she exited the facility. It was only when they were out there, by the stage, that he looked her over. He saw her. “You look good.” He did not approve.

“Thanks.” She straightened her back and felt more confident knowing that he did not approve of what she wore. She had to be the rebel that he saw her as.

“Stick to the talking points.” He handed her a note card. “Relay them, tell them that they needed to work together, and that soon the Circles would help them.” She nodded and walked before the cameras with him. Alan spoke for long with lofty words that made her chest ached. He spoke on how they were working at their finest and how soon everyone would need to start moving towards the ships. He said that those without homes would have space to live in soon, and that they were all going to be safe.

When he gave the microphone to Heia she blanked, fully, and completely. Every word in her mind disappeared and everything she knew to say was gone. Her tongue was tied and she understood then that she needed far, far more practice in order not to balk in front of millions.

“We will be okay. Keep working. The- the Circles will help us soon.” It was forced, broken, horrible and she almost wanted to storm away. When Alan said he’d allow for her to show off the techniques that Evester had spoke on, she knew she had blew it. Walking to Lynx and Kim she wanted to cry.

“Head up.” Lynx told her. “You sucked and that’s fine. We can’t all be Evester. What matters now is you prove that you aren’t a joke.”

“But I am.” Heia warned her, not believing for a moment she was the right person for the job. “I’m not the best at these.”

“But you are better than them.” Kim told her, wiping Heia’s brow. She erased whatever sweat and tears had formed, tears Heia didn’t even know she had. Kim then put a holoblade in her hand. “Take them down. No mercy.”

“Take who down?” Heia turned to the field where she would be fighting. Before her were two large soldiers dressed ready to attack her.

“No Mercy.” Kori walked up. She had been dressed for her part in this matter as well. Where Heia looked like a soldier, however, Kori looked like a mercenary out of some old film.

“Now the techniques state that you must have a partner.” Alan spoke out. “Your partner?”

“It’s me!” Kori smiled. “I hope you don’t mind.”

Kori was the best at adapting to Heia. They could not use EverDanger members who were reknown for their existing skill. Kori shot Heia the most breathtaking look that renewed the confidence within Heia. In moments the world was going to be in awe, Heia could feel it. Deep breath in and deep breath out, Heia looked at the men, holoblade in her hand glowing.

No mercy.

The match was called and Kori and Heia sprinted. These were not men but Aralax. You never fought Aralax head on.

Moving away, Heia helped launch her sister into the air before going to attack the man’s legs. Kori tumbled over him and used the force of her body to knock the man down from behind as Heia moved to attack his legs. He was unable to avoid it. First man on the ground, Kori spun her weapon out providing the killing blow without actually killing anyone, but Heia did not see it. She was already attacking the second from behind. Sliding under and kicking up she knocked the man off balance in time for Kori to knock him off his feet and for Heia to provide the killing attack.

Thirty seconds was the time the battle took. Thirty seconds to knock trained soldiers down, soldiers who had probably looked down on them because they were civilians. The trained soldiers forgot that they’d survived weeks in no man’s land with only Aralax.

“I hope that helps!” Kori smiled.

Alan Penn was at a loss for words, and Heia helped the men up. “Practice the techniques Evester gave you. It’s whats going to save everyone.”

Kori cheered out. “Everything is going to be okay, right Heia?”

“As long as we work together and train like our lives depend on it, because they do. These skills may come in handy in the next world too.” She then paused knowing the camera was getting her words. “And the Circles will come.”

“You are sure?” Kori asked her. Kori had set this up to redeem her and Heia couldn’t be happier. Heia was going to took it and went with it.

“There is nothing I’m more certain of.” Heia and Kori walked off back to Kim, Lynx, Onyx, Trace, and Robee, as if saying that they were ready to take on the world if they had to, if it meant saving it.

130 Days Until Adaption And the Uncertain End (part 1)

Zeydar stood aside as Kony recited and practiced the magic spells that Zeydar had gotten for him. Zeydar had been called to the Superiors multiple times, and with each time, he had picked up books from the libraries while under direct supervision. Like he had on the bus, Kony absorbed the information like a sponge. He was excellent in his magic control, however his technique was severely lacking. Kony came across as a mage who had only begun, even if he was better off than half of the classical trained mages that Zeydar had seen. Regardless, Kony was far more skilled than he had been months ago.

“Was he never trained?” May stood by Zeydar observing with him.

“What part of, came from the Undercities, don’t you get?” Shawn chastised her. There was a bit of frustration in his voice that made Zeydar wonder if they had, had the conversation before.

“I thought you meant you found him there, not that he was…” May’s words dropped as she continued to stare out. Zeydar knew that she was sheltered, as he had been, however the facts were there for her to read. Kony looked just like his siblings.

“He was classified as an X.” Zeydar spoke nonchalantly before shouting to Kony. “Try that one again. Aim higher.” Kony nodded and did as he was told.

“How?” May asked Zeydar. “We have tests! He should have been here with us.”

Concinnity {RW}

The world slowed as Tony took the hit of magic, directly protecting Tiana. She fell to the ground with his body on top of her. For a moment everyone stood silently, waiting on baited breath for him to rise. They watched as Tiana’s shaking hands grasped her brother’s body, pulling him closer to her. They could hear her saying his name over and over again.

“Tony. Are you okay?”

“Tony.”

“Anthony, this is not funny.”

“Anthony?”

“Tony?”

“Please. Tony. Please…”

“No. No. No. nonononononononono.”

131 Days Until Eyes Open And the Uncertain End

Zeydar looked over the report from the X’s. Heia had already pulled her hand and Xs were beginning to protest and support the cause. Some were protesting the Circles and Stars, while others were flocking in droves to be selected for the factories to work to create the ships. There was movement and it was the movement that would drive them to a greater height in the future. It could only be see as a good thing, although Zeydar did not see all that was happening as a good thing.

“It’s mayhem.” Europa put down the report. “They don’t have the infrastructure to be able to support and manage all those people.” Zeydar wondered if she were already calculating the expenses and requirements to ensure that the whole cause did not fall apart.

“Kim will figure something out.” Phil spoke after he’d finished his copy. “But it will only be temporary. As long as Circles and Stars do not help, it will not be completed.” His eyes traveled over to Zeydar as if telling him that he needed to work harder on breaking the Star establishment.

“The X’s will do something. Alan Penn is not a complete idiot.” Estashia put her pen down. She had written all over her copy and as she handed her notes to Europa she spoke to herself. “However, that does not stop the Circles from having to do their own work.”

132 Days Until Fury And the Uncertain End (Part 2)

Evester looked at the blank canvas that would be the new training facility. The warehouse had been emptied and that meant that there were endless possibilities for the space. Evester knew that he was not the best person to be tasked with the job. He also knew that everyone around him had the audacious goal to make sure that he grew in some way.

“In the perfect world it would have everything already built.” Crass laughed to himself. “We can put up some obstacle boxes and practice targets.”

“Practice targets? We know where the Aralax hideout is, lure some out. Real targets are better.” Karla suggested.

“Girl, you are crazy.” Rayda shoved Karla a little. There was a bit of laughter as Evester starred into the whole room taking it all in. Rayda addressed him next, by placing her hand on his shoulder. “But we are going to need models, Evester.”

“As well as a full-scale battle situation.” Evester turned to face them all. The room was so bare, what could they do in the amount of time that they had? “Do they want us to build fake cities?”

“We are going to have to.” Karla looked to her clipboard. “Most of the battles will not be fought on open ground from the notes. We have an advantage in cities, but so do they.” There was a gravity to her voice that had Evester’s entire mood sinking. They did not have the time or the supplies to create an accurate training ground. Nor did they have the human resources to train.

One Aunt Grace {RW14}

One Aunt Grace {RW14}

Cynthia always said the door was an oak one. The description of this door changed all the time, but the wood was always oak. It may have been painted red (with white swirls and gold twist knobs and hinges) or bleached oak (with a brass keyhole and a peephole painted black). It sometimes was as large as ten feet and other times just big enough for her to squeeze through at six years old. Most of the time it was a standard seven foot tall, dark brown door with a black handle that could only be pushed down, and squeaked when it tried to move open. It was, however, always oak.

Cynthia doesn’t have a key. Not in the way that Cyndy and I do — or rather I do, as Cyndy lost hers far too long ago. Cynthia does know, however, that her aunt had one. Aunt Grace had a long black iron key that she held on her at all times. Cynthia said it was far too heavy for her to ever hold. (Which was not saying much as the last time Cynthia had been to Aunt Grace’s was when she had been no more than eight and she had been a very weak child.)

Cynthia had only ever gotten a glimpse into the room once — although she swears she had never seen the room open in her life. This attic door, she claimed, was the gateway to a back attic room stuff full of old brown boxes and a single window looking to the outside. The exterior roofline of the house had no such window. And while Cynthia says that’s what she saw, she will likewise swear that it never opened. It never could open. It never should have been opened.

132 Days Until Fury And the Uncertain End (Part 1)

Heia stood with Lynx and Onyx as Kim worked with Trace, Robee, and Kori on their training. Heia’s mind wandered to the kiss from night before. The short sweet kiss that had been interrupted by the alarm from Lynx’s computer, telling them that the file was about to finish being uploaded to the EverDanger page. Neither Kim nor Heia had said anything after it. Nothing had come from it.

And Heia didn’t care.

She should have cared. She kept telling herself to care. But she didn’t. There was nothing that she could force herself to feel. There was no sense of loss nor sense of disappointment. There was no excitement or anxious thoughts circling her head. She watched as Kim smiled with the practice, and knew only the facts. Of course Kim was smiling. Of course Kim was happy. Of course Kim looked perfect as always.

Something was wrong with Heia, but she didn’t know what it was.

134 Days Until Normality And the Uncertain End (part 2)

Zeydar sat with Heia’s family feeling more than awkward as Shawn spoke for the both of them. Layla and Andre were anxious regarding siblings. Seemingly, however, Kony was carefree. He did not flinch when Layla slammed her hands down on the table.

“Karla staid where?” Layla snapped. Kony had informed her them that Karla was with Evester in the middle of the Aralax lands. Zeydar was unsurprised that she had exploded in fear, but he was shocked that Kony reacted as if she had whispered the words.

“Crass is good. He won’t let anyone hurt her.” Kony shook his head. “Plus she’s real smart with science.”

“She’s staying with someone she just met and he’s a man.” Andre placed his hand on Layla’s shoulder trying to get her to relax, and speaking to Kony as if he should understand. Zeydar watched as Kony shrugged off the words like they were small water droplets.

“I hardly think that Crass is worth that fear.” Shawn rolled his eyes. “He sees her as a little sister, nothing more.”

“How can you  know that?” Layla hissed.

“Rayda is up there too.” Kony added.

“And that’s supposed to make me feel better? Rayda?” Layla rolled her eyes. Zeydar did not blame her for being protective. The others had gone together but Karla had staid on her own. Comparatively, the others were in a “safer” situation.
