140 Days Until Miracles And the Uncertain End (part 1)

With sound came the tremors. Small earthquakes at first, then larger ones, then Zeydar had forced himself to adapt. To cut off the sound and to block it out, to focus, and keep calm. His magic had went crazy, but Kony and Evester were able to calm him together. They wove sort of magic of their own, Heia had to believe, as they were able to comfort Zeydar to withstand the concert volumes that drove her insane. They only played the loud sounds for ten minutes and he had been able to withstand them, then had come the normal sounds of the world and suddenly he had perked up. Relieved.

Exhausted. Powerless. But Relieved.

Next came light. They started by turning up the dimmed lights, and then revealing the day light to him. Like with sound, as they turned up the brightness, the lights blinded him. Too much color drove him crazy, but Heia watched as he struggled to preserver. Each day he breathed out, dying in a way, and being forced to tame himself to control himself as he was left with none. Unlike predicted, there came no explosions. There had been a power outage when the sunlight hit his eyes, but otherwise they had escaped the worst.

The worst of Zeydar’s shakes were past. His temperature had returned to normal, and his pulse had started to return to an elevated, but relatively normal rate, so said Rayda. His mood, she said, would need time to full return back to normal, as would his ability to adjust to sensation. There was uncharted territory with someone who had been on the drugs since being a child, someone who experienced them differently than everyone else. Rayda had newly hypothesized he’d have panic episodes, vivid memories and perhaps hallucinations, depression from his trauma and the lack of the Dreams, as well as mood swings. She, however, did not know what it would do to his concentration. He would still face withdrawal symptoms, but he was past the initial hump in his process to recovery.

145 Days Until Sleep And the Uncertain End (part 3)

Evester sighed walking into his room ready to sleep. He looked at his hand. Don’t touch me. Zeydar had slapped him away when they had reintroduced sound by the smallest margin. The tent was still super sound proofed, but within the next day and a half, they’d reintroduce Zeydar to sound up to concert decibels, so that he could get used to the noise that would be too loud for him.

The way that Zeydar had turned from him and Kony and tried to block out the sound had been too much. There had been so much pain in Zeydar’s screams and curses. That had only been at the beginning too. By the end Zeydar had been shaking.

The earthquakes had rippled, like tides. They had only been able to stabilize so much. Without his constant mutterings and spells, his magic had gone haywire, however they had seen the end of it. Zeydar’s magic had run out in the end and he had tired himself out. They had to believe that it would not regenerate fast enough for him to cause too much danger with light introduction.

Evester’s sleeve was ripped to shreds and feint lines of scratches were etched across his skin. There was no broken skin or blood, just light pink lines. He rubbed his thumb across the raised skin.

“I heard you grabbed him.” Heia walked into the room. Evester looked to her from his arm to see her holding bandages and alcohol to clean his wounds.

“I did.” And he knew he shouldn’t have. “He can’t hide from the sound. He has to face it.”

“And you let yourself get injured?”

145 Days Until Sleep And the Uncertain End (part 2)

Heia sat looking over the production plans with Kim and Shawn. The Ships to leave the planet were being made in this warehouse and others all over the world by the machines and there was little work to be done, outside making sure there were no issues or warnings. Their job was to sit and watch the computers and machines for errors. Heia wished she were with Evester and Kony, working on getting Zeydar’s sensations back. Heia watched the production line, ready to fall asleep when her chair shook and the desk started shaking. Heia felt the jolt race through her body as the world rocked and moved.

Her mind flashed back to the Catastrophe. The screams, the terror, the loss of life. Was it happening again? Was this the end? Had the uncertain end come too early? Immediately Heia was under a table, the sirens were going off, and Shawn and Kim were under tables as well. Shawn looked to the lights that swung, and the computes sounded their shut down procedures. Prayers were at Heia’s lips as they waited for the shaking to stop. It was over as soon as it began.

“What was that?” Shawn asked the others, refusing to come out of under the desk where he had pulled Kim to hide.

145 Days Until Sleep And the Uncertain End (part 1)

Evester stepped into the tent to see Zeydar fast asleep. Rayda monitored him as Lynx and Onyx traded places for the shift change. Rayda glanced up to Evester as he walked in. Unlike the popular belief, Zeydar had not exploded in his power. He had drifted into silence, outside of his constant mumblings.

“The heart beat is focusing him.” Rayda told him when he walked in. Kony pushed past Evester to Zeydar’s side.

Evester had heard the mumblings. Many were spells other were audible words they could understand. Zeydar had repeated Evester’s name over and over again along with convincing comments to himself. Zeydar had to remind himself that if the heart beat was near, what he saw was not real, which made Evester question what Zeydar was seeing. Uly had predicted a massive fallout, that everyone had been prepared for, but there had been none. There had been a decrease in the wind, a rise in the heat for no reason, but otherwise there had been nothing.

Kony had said he felt Zeydar’s magic, thick like a storm, racing through everything and everyone, but refusing to hurt anyone. Less destruction, more of a warning. Kony said that Zeydar was tracing, tracking, and protecting everyone at once, using spells constantly so that his magic had a way to reach out, even though it hurt him. He as using his magic as spells, so that it would not explode out of him, and they all had to be thankful that his rational mind was able to do so.

148 Days Until Terror And the Uncertain End

Heia sat with Evester, listening to the monitor. They were waiting to hear any sudden change — something bad that they’d have to stop– and hearing nothing. There was the soft thump of Evester’s recorded heart beat, it was loud enough for Zeydar to hear it in his agony, but not loud enough to drive anyone else nuts listening. For Heia it was a strong metronome clicking its time away for them all.

Plans were being made as Zeydar’s process continued. Like the heart beat, time moved on and they too had to keep going. Lynx, Onyx, Trace, and Robee announced their plan to go with Heia, while Rayda, Crass, and Uly would remain behind. They had to bolster Heia’s numbers for what she was planning in convincing the X’s to join the Circles and Stars. They also wanted to share what they learned from fighting, all while making sure that they were overwhelmed by the politics, they knew she’d face. Kori said she too, was going with Heia.

“I’m going with Zeydar.” Kony announced, snapping Heia’s attention back to the meeting.

“You are?” Kori asked him. There was devastation in her voice, as if she could not believe that her brother would make such choice. She was probably one of the few people who thought it. Kony was a Star, he had to learn magic. Heia had seen the way Kony had fallen for magic so thoroughly, and how much he ached to learn more. Kony’s choice was no surprise to her, at least.

149 Days Until Bravery And the Uncertain End

Zeydar was put in a tent surrounded by blankets and supervision. They had found an IV drip in the facility, and with the combined help of those who had gotten their certifications, Evester felt more confident in it all. His friends had gone to school for things not like this, all for the sake of their futures — and in a way EverDanger, as it supported them — but they’d never done something like this. There would be absolutely no Dreams for Zeydar from this point on and Evester was perhaps more nervous than Zeydar who was sitting patient on his new cot bed.

“We are going to be with you.” Evester told him when Rayda walked out the tent and the two were alone. The reassurance was more for Evester than it was for Zeydar.

“Bad move.” Zeydar shook his head. Evester took out the speakers and placed them on the floor. They were wireless, and if everything worked properly, would work from a far. “What is that for?”

“I recorded my heart beat for you.” Evester stated even though he knew it was one of the most corny things he could say. He felt embarrassed for all about two seconds before continuing to set them up. He knew how Zeydar had used his heart beat as a life line for days. If nothing else, the sound might ground him when the Dreams remnants overtook him, causing him to crave them more than reality.
